not as hard as you may think, but the market for sub $5k E36 M3's definitely isn't as big as it was 2 years ago.

you're in the NY area right? I saw a techno violet '98 Manual coupe for $4k obo a few weeks ago.. It needed a radiator and it had over 175k on it, but it looked really clean. Owner swapped in seats from an E46, so the interior looked great.

Mmmmm everything about that car is good. I like the smaller steering wheel too. 356s usually have really big, thin steering wheels. That seems much better.

I know. That's one of the things I immediately noticed about it. In addition, it's rare to see one this original and with the same owner for so long.

after some research, I would too. I might even try to. A 240z, E36 M3, and a third car I'm just completely blanking on right now are my top 3 choices for a car.
Why get something else that's more reliable or cheaper? I'm saving for a car that makes me happy.. Not something that almost does.

![]() 10/27/2014 at 22:30 |

No I somehow missed them! Thanks for giving me another notification.
That Ferrari looks right up your alley!
You can never go wrong with a 2.7 RS. Ever.
That Alfa has been on sale FOREVER, I assume they're asking an unreasonable price.
![]() 10/27/2014 at 22:35 |
|
No problem.
I do love classic Ferraris.
True but I've already owned one. It does bring back great memories though.
Oh. I didn't realize that. If I have Alfa questions I should contact you since you seem to be an expert on them.
![]() 10/27/2014 at 22:37 |
|
I'm not too knowledgeable on them yet since I haven't owned one yet, but I know ones that'll sell quickly and I know ones that'll be on the market for months, if not years.
![]() 10/27/2014 at 22:39 |
|
What is your assessment of this car that we discussed yesterday?
http://www.hemmings.com/classifieds/de…
![]() 10/27/2014 at 22:43 |
|
I think it's a REALLY good looking car. It's been on sale for a really long time though. Many many months. If it was $10k less, it would've sold a very long time ago. It is in Canada, so I guess that affects the pricing.
![]() 10/27/2014 at 22:47 |
|
Interesting. When I initially looked at it, I thought it looked amazing but felt that it was a bit overpriced as well.
Maybe someone will be able to negotiate them down and get a terrific vehicle.
![]() 10/27/2014 at 22:49 |
|
I'd go to Canada and pay $30k for it. It is a US vehicle according to the ad, so I guess that's less hoops to jump through.
![]() 10/27/2014 at 22:52 |
|
Sounds like a fair price.
I noticed that as well. I'm assuming that's helpful when importing it.
![]() 10/27/2014 at 22:54 |
|
It's too bad, cars like this were going for half the price they're asking about 2 years ago.
Then everyone realized how awesome they are.
![]() 10/27/2014 at 23:01 |
|
This same narrative unfortunately applies to many great vehicles recently.

![]() 10/27/2014 at 23:17 |

What's even crazier are the Ferrari prices. For instance, I bought my 275 GTB/C in '71 for $5,000 (probably around $30,000 in today's money) and they're now worth a fair bit more:
http://www.rmauctions.com/lots/lot.cfm?l…
![]() 10/28/2014 at 07:23 |
|
Oh man that car looks magnificent. That engine!
Again, people realize how awesome these cars really are. I just hope they're driven properly instead of sitting in a garage their whole life.
![]() 10/28/2014 at 11:33 |
|
An all around great car.
Well, the unfortunate thing is that your generation just doesn't ever get to see and hear cars like this so it's difficult to gain true appreciation for them. While I love that people collect these cars and take exquisite car of them, it frustrates me that they hid them in their garages and only allow certain people to see them.
Look what someone shared with me last night:
http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/there-you-go-1…
![]() 10/28/2014 at 11:40 |

Did I read that right, there's only 12 of them, and you owned one?! So cool!
The only thing that the young people are really exposed to nowadays is this kind of stuff:
*shudders*
WOW that's amazing, that car is so unique.
![]() 10/28/2014 at 11:48 |
|
Yes. Like I've said before, I've definitely been very blessed.
Please, tell me that that isn't real.
Indeed. I've always had a soft spot for the A110 but they're so small that my 6'5'' frame could never fit comfortably in one.
![]() 10/28/2014 at 11:52 |
|
I found it on the internet, but it looks real sadly. What's even more depressing is the FF behind it is just as low to the ground.
I'd love to see one in real life, just to get a sense of how small they really are.
![]() 10/28/2014 at 12:05 |
|
True. While I love that people are creative and try to make their cars unique, I really can't understand how individuals could think this is nice looking.
This is about the only photo I could find that shows a size comparison and even this isn't very good. Essentially, it's a low, wide car that has very little space inside the cabin.
![]() 10/28/2014 at 12:08 |
|
Sounds like the Alfa 4C to be honest. Low, wide, and small. But this car is on a completely different level. So cool.
![]() 10/28/2014 at 12:19 |
|
Exactly. A very good comparison.
It is very cool, especially the rally versions:
Look at this wheel arch:
Also, a factory photo just because I love seeing classic cars being produced:
![]() 10/28/2014 at 12:25 |
|
SO MUCH ARCH
I wonder if anyone in that factory knew how special all of those cars were going to be. Hard to put it into perspective.
![]() 10/28/2014 at 12:35 |
|
I doubt it and you're right. I think everyone sets out with goals to make great cars and has high hopes for them, but I doubt the Alpine employees could have predicted the success the A110 would enjoy. It must have been so gratifying to see the cars that you yourself put together, designed, engineered, etc. taking on the best and prevailing.
On another point, I'm sure many of the workers from back then would be surprised by how much classic cars are worth these days. I mean personally, I can barely believe that a 250 GTO is worth ~$40 million when you could get them for around $4,000 (around $20,000 in today's money) back in the late '60s and early '70s.
![]() 10/28/2014 at 12:44 |
|
Yeah, that's seriously amazing. The most interesting parts about car history is that some cars were considered not that successful when they first came out, now are highly sought after. Your two GTs are a good example. I remember hearing about them not selling too well when they first came out.
![]() 10/28/2014 at 12:56 |
|
Very true. For instance, I picked up my black GT in 2008 for $125,000 and the car had less than 200 miles on it. In addition, I remember dealers were selling them for $10,000 under MSRP around '06 or '07 just to get them off their lots. It's odd how perceptions change so quickly.
What I think happened is that people held a brand bias and never tried them initially. However, once they realized how good of a car it is, the prices soared (a bit too much in my opinion).
![]() 10/28/2014 at 13:07 |
|
That makes sense. Once Jeremy Clarkson actually bought one, people started to realize what a gem it was.
I think the same thing is happening with the Fiesta ST. Ford doesn't make hot hatchbacks!
But it's an amazing car.
![]() 10/28/2014 at 14:43 |
|
I believe so as well.
I agree. The Fiesta ST seems like a really good car and you can't beat its price.

Hey mine was $2800. Just gonna keep saving up and drooling over all the fancy ones on Petrolicious.
![]() 11/12/2014 at 21:26 |

I wouldn't mind picking one up that needs a little more work, but I don't have a garage so it's pretty tough to do major work.
I still need to convince my parents to let me get one.. As they're matching however much I make.
![]() 11/12/2014 at 21:56 |
|
I don't have a garage either. At least not until summer when I can move to a house with one. I have tools and access to a shop so I think I'll be okay, considering I'm not gonna do THAT much over the winter with it.
It's funny cause I didn't even tell my parents about the whole plan with my friend going to check it out until like a couple days before I bought it haha.
![]() 11/12/2014 at 22:18 |
|
Haha if I already had my license I'd just do that but it's tough keeping things from parents when they're ths ones driving you most places.
I'm lucky and my dads friend owns a garage which means I get cheap labor, but I'd rather do the wrenching myself whenever possible because what's the fun in not working on your old Datsun?
![]() 11/12/2014 at 22:32 |
|
I guess I lucked out then cause the shop I know isn't really a mechanic, just some guys toy shop. Apparently he drifts S13s and does spec miata or something and he just as a big building right by where I work.
![]() 11/12/2014 at 23:30 |

Damn, that's cool. I'm in the suburbs so not much like that too close to my house, school, or workplace.
![]() 11/12/2014 at 23:36 |

That thing looks sweet! Did you talk to the owner?
![]() 11/13/2014 at 20:45 |

Fingers crossed they are!
No, but I'm certainly going to try to in the future. I've been going by this car (under a cover) for years now without ever caring about it. Crazy! He also has some 60's dodge sedan parked next to it, I saw him working on the Datsun a few nights ago but I was running late and couldn't talk to him.

Hey, it's got the same wheels as me!! Looks good though, clean interior, MANUAL!!, seems to be in pretty good shape. Do it!!
![]() 11/13/2014 at 21:35 |

I want to! I have $1100, and my dad is supposed to match what I make so I have the funds!
But it's not that simple. My dad is being a dick about this, with no knowledge of Datsuns he's mantained that they are "no good". Convincing him is now #1 priority.
![]() 11/13/2014 at 23:54 |
|
Ah yes, the baby boomer resentment of vintage imports ("rice burners"). Just gotta show him it's really what you want and explain how simple they are. I had to go through exactly this when I bought my first truck (a Toyota pickup).
